Brain Tumors

What Are the Symptoms of Brain Tumors?
The symptoms of brain tumors can vary depending on the tumor’s location, size, and the area of the brain it affects:
- Headache (especially more severe in the mornings)
- Nausea and vomiting
- Vision, speech, or hearing impairments
- Balance and walking difficulties
- Memory problems
- Personality changes
- Seizures (epilepsy)
- Weakness or numbness on one side of the body
Each symptom can also be a sign of another disease, but if such symptoms are present, a neurosurgeon must be consulted.
How Is a Brain Tumor Treated?
The treatment plan varies depending on the tumor’s type (benign/malignant), location, and size:
- Surgical Intervention: Removal of the tumor. Microscopic and endoscopic methods are often preferred.
- Radiotherapy: Used to kill tumor cells, especially in malignant tumors.
- Chemotherapy: Aims to stop the growth of cells with medication in some malignant tumors.
- Follow-up: For some benign and slow-growing tumors, MRI follow-ups can be performed at regular intervals.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Emir Kaan İzci prioritizes both patient safety and treatment success by using high-precision surgical techniques and advanced imaging methods.
Surgery and Post-Op
- Surgery Duration: It can generally last between 2–6 hours, depending on the tumor’s location.
- Method: Open craniotomy or endoscopic techniques can be used.
- Recovery: A hospital stay of a few days may be necessary after surgery. If speech, balance, or motor skills are affected, a neurological rehabilitation process is initiated.
- Check-ups: MRI check-ups are recommended in the first month and then at 3-6 month intervals.
Supportive Exercises and Care
To support physical and mental recovery in the post-brain tumor period:
- Light walking and balance exercises
- Attention and memory exercises (solving puzzles, writing)
- Breathing exercises
- Guided physical therapy
Conclusion
Brain tumors can be brought under control or completely treated with early diagnosis and correct intervention. Thanks to modern surgical techniques, patient safety and quality of life have been significantly increased.
